Stay near Fukui's dinosaur discoveries, then slow down in Awara

Fukui's headline dinosaur museum is in Katsuyama, while Awara Onsen offers a very different end to the day: a hot spring town, a garden walk and a guided matcha session. Fukui City works well for rail connections and dining; staying in Awara puts the bath and tea experience close by. These hotels and one bookable activity let you build the trip around the pace you want.

Our selection

How we chose

  • Decide how you will reach Katsuyama before choosing a base. Fukui Station is a useful rail hub, while a direct Awara-to-museum bus operates only on selected dates and seasons.
  • Choose Fukui City for station access and a city hot spring bath, or Awara for an evening in the onsen district and an easier start to the matcha experience.
  • The Awara hot spring and matcha activity includes a bath visit and a guided tea session; it is not admission to the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum. Arrange museum entry and transport separately.

Good to know before you book

The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum is in Katsuyama, not Fukui City or Awara. A direct bus from Awara Onsen is available on selected operating days, but service is limited, so check the current timetable before planning a same-day connection. Rail and bus via Fukui Station are another route to consider.

KAMENOI HOTEL FUKUI sits on a hill with a panoramic bath supplied by Bessho natural hot spring water, and the museum is about a 50-minute drive away. In the city, Dormy Inn PREMIUM Fukui has a natural hot spring bath and serves Echizen oroshi soba at breakfast when a breakfast plan is selected; Hotel Riverge Akebono pairs a skylight public bath with views across Fukui and the Asuwa River.

The bookable Awara Onsen experience is a half-day cultural break: soak once, join an instructor-led matcha session at a traditional tea shop and walk through a garden. It does not include Dinosaur Museum admission, so treat the museum and the Awara activity as separate bookings in the itinerary.

Rates and availability depend on dates, guests and selected options. Check the terms on the product page.
