Four ways to settle into Gero’s hot spring town

Gero Onsen follows the Hida River through a small hot spring town, with inns along the water and on the surrounding slopes. These stays differ in meaningful ways: registered historic architecture, seasonal dining, station transfers and rooms with their own open-air bath. Decide whether a view, a meal or private bathing matters most before choosing a plan.

How we chose

  • Decide how you want to reach the inn from Gero Station. Yunoshimakan and Bosenkan sit on the hillside; Yamagataya offers a shuttle timed to selected train arrivals. Confirm shuttle hours when you book.
  • For bathing in private, look for a room category that explicitly includes an open-air bath at Sasara. Not every room has one, so check the exact room and plan rather than relying on the property name.
  • Choose between a riverside setting, a town view and a quieter hillside retreat. The atmosphere and dining style vary from one ryokan to another, making the stay itself part of a Gero visit.

Good to know before you book

Yunoshimakan opened in 1931 and is registered as a tangible cultural property. Its expansive hillside grounds look over Gero Onsen, making the inn a natural choice when historic architecture and a retreat-like setting matter as much as location.

If dinner is central to your stay, check which meal plan you are booking. Bosenkan highlights seasonal cuisine and a private open-air bath, while Yamagataya pairs hot spring bathing with local Hida ingredients. Meals and shuttle arrangements depend on the selected plan.

Sasara sits above the town and combines an artistic antique-filled lobby with a rock bath and spa. Twenty of its 44 rooms have an open-air bath; select one of those room types if private bathing is the reason for your stay.

Rates and availability depend on dates, guests and selected options. Check the terms on the product page.
