Where to stay between Izumo Taisha and Matsue Castle

Izumo Taisha and Matsue Castle sit in different parts of Shimane, so your base shapes the trip. Stay by the shrine for a slower visit to Izumo Taisha, near Izumoshi or Matsue Station for rail connections, or in Hinomisaki or Tamatsukuri for a hot spring stay. This shortlist includes restored heritage lodging, two station hotels and two ryokan with a strong sense of place.

How we chose

  • For an early shrine visit, stay in the Izumo Taisha shrine town or along the Hinomisaki coast. Check evening transport and dinner options if you are not driving.
  • For Matsue Castle, Lake Shinji and onward rail trips, Matsue Station is a practical base. Izumoshi Station works better for the shrine side and trains across the region.
  • Choose your onsen by setting: ocean views at Hinomisaki, a classic hot spring district at Tamatsukuri, or a natural public bath beside the station.

Good to know before you book

Izumo Taisha and Matsue Castle are not walkable from one another. Think of Izumoshi Station as the shrine-side hub and Matsue Station as the city and castle hub. If both matter equally, splitting the stay avoids retracing the same long route each day.

NIPPONIA Izumo Taisha Monzenmachi turns historic houses in the shrine town into guest accommodation, putting the old streets at the centre of the stay. On the coast, KAI Izumo looks out over the Sea of Japan, sits a short walk from Hinomisaki Shrine and stages a performance rooted in local mythology.

For transport, Dormy Inn Izumo is beside Izumoshi Station and pairs the rail location with a natural hot spring and local breakfast options. Matsue Excel Hotel Tokyu is a three-minute walk from Matsue Station. KAI Tamatsukuri gives the trip a slower rhythm with historic onsen water, regional seafood and tea culture.
