In Sapporo, a city-centre aquarium, observatories and suburban sights such as the ski jump and historical village are all reachable by public transport, and Otaru is about 40 minutes by JR for an easy day trip. Spend daylight on observatories and museums, then head up Mt. Moiwa or Mt. Tengu after dark.

Sapporo · Mt. Moiwa
Sapporo’s signature night-view spot, reached by ropeway and then a mini cable car. By day the city and greenery spread below; after dark the streets fill with light, and the Bell of Happiness and love-lock spot at the top serve as a couples’ photo stop.
Sapporo · Okurayama
An observatory built at the ski-jump venue of the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics; a lift takes you up to 307 m above the jump. You look over Sapporo and the Ishikari Plain from the same angle a jumper sees at the start gate.
Sapporo · Hitsujigaoka
An observation hill that began as a research farm raising more than 2,000 sheep, with wide pastures and, on clear days, Sapporo Dome and the Ishikari Plain in view. The statue of Dr. Clark, known for “Boys, be ambitious,” makes a natural photo stop.
Sapporo · City-centre mall
A city aquarium inside a central Sapporo mall, showing about 4,000 creatures of more than 250 species. Little blue penguins just 30–40 cm long are the highlight, and a touch programme with small fish makes it an easy fit whatever the weather.
Sapporo · Suburban open-air museum
An open-air museum opened in 1983 for Hokkaido’s settlement centennial, with more than 50 relocated Meiji- and Taisho-era homes, schools and shops. Walk the town, fishing, farming and mountain village zones, step inside, and ride period transport such as a horse-drawn tram or sleigh.
Otaru · Canal
Opened in 1923, the canal carried cargo when Otaru was called the “Wall Street of the North.” Stone warehouses turned glass shops line the water, with old street lamps along the opposite bank. Check the booking page for what the ticket includes.
Otaru · Mt. Tengu
A 30-person ropeway climbs to the 532.5 m summit of Mt. Tengu in five minutes, where a rooftop deck shows Otaru’s lights tracing the coastline. It is counted with Mt. Hakodate and Mt. Moiwa among Hokkaido’s three great night views and was a snow-scene location for the film Love Letter.
Otaru · Northern coast
An aquarium showing hundreds of species from cold to temperate waters, including Ishikari Bay herring and Atka mackerel and rare harbour porpoises. Dolphin, penguin, seal and sea-lion shows run through the day, and feeding time for a walrus weighing over a tonne is its signature moment.
A good first day in Sapporo: AOAO SAPPORO and the Okurayama observatory by day, then the Mt. Moiwa ropeway for the night view.
For an Otaru day trip, walk the stone warehouses along the canal and visit the aquarium in the morning, then ride up Mt. Tengu at dusk for the harbour-town lights. The canal’s old street lamps are at their best on winter nights.
The Historical Village and Hitsujigaoka lie in Sapporo’s suburbs, easiest to combine by car. The Dr. Clark statue photo spot is at Hitsujigaoka.
