From the airport express to unlimited private railways: 4 Kansai passes

Kansai passes split by railway company. For JR routes to Kyoto, Nara and Himeji, choose the JR Kansai Area Pass; for private lines such as Hankyu, Keihan and Kintetsu plus subways, the Kansai Railway Pass Lite fits. Treat airport transfers (Haruka) and Osaka-only days (subway pass) separately.

How we chose

  • JR passes do not work on private railways or subways, and vice versa. Check which company serves the station nearest each sight.
  • With few rides per day, single tickets can be cheaper. Compare estimated fares with the pass price.
  • E-tickets start differently—QR scan or exchange for a paper pass. Confirm the steps at your first station.

Good to know before you book

Staying in Osaka with day trips out to Kyoto, Nara or Himeji over three nights or more, the JR Kansai Area Pass is the simplest to calculate. On days when the sights sit far from JR stations, adding single tickets or buses works better.

For two or three days hopping between Arashiyama, central Kyoto temples, Nara and Kobe’s Sannomiya on private lines, a single Kansai Railway Pass Lite keeps things simple. Staying near a private-railway station lets you use it from the first ride each morning.

You can also mix passes by day: take Haruka to a station near your hotel on arrival, then switch to the 26- or 48-hour subway pass once your days stay inside Osaka.

Rates and availability depend on dates, guests and selected options. Check the terms on the product page.
