From unlimited subway rides to Yokohama sight passes: 7 Tokyo passes explained

Tokyo passes fall into three types: unlimited subway rides, bundles of attraction tickets, and sightseeing buses. The Tokyo City Pass pairs Metro tickets with attraction vouchers, other passes bundle attraction entries only, and Sky Hop Bus lets you hop on and off along its routes. Fix your trip length and the places you want first, then choose among the 7 below.

Our selection

How we chose

  • We first sorted by whether a subway ticket is included. The City Pass contains Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway QR tickets, one pass is built around attraction entries, and the Tokyo–Yokohama pass describes exchanging a Tokyo Metro 1-day ticket first.
  • Passes that bundle attractions allow one entry per facility. The Tokyo–Yokohama pass is not refundable if you use fewer than four, so count the places you really want before choosing.
  • Exchange methods differ. The City Pass is exchanged by QR at Metro or Toei stations; the Metro 1-day ticket of the Tokyo–Yokohama pass is exchanged first at the Tokyo Station (08:00–20:00) or Shinjuku Station (09:00–17:00) tourist information; Sky Hop Bus asks you to show the e-ticket screen to the driver.

Good to know before you book

For covering many places quickly by subway, the City Pass is the baseline. The 3-day pass gives 72 hours on all Tokyo Metro lines, while the 1-day pass pairs the subway with attractions such as the Tokyo City View observation deck at Roppongi Hills. Keep the ticket's magnetic strip away from phones and magnetic wallets, which can stop gates reading it.

To reach Yokohama, choose the Tokyo–Yokohama pass (up to four of seven attractions) or the 7-attraction Ivy pass, valid for 30 days from first use. For a loose, multi-day plan the 30-day pass is easier; if you have narrowed your list to four, the first pass is simpler. The Tokyo Fun Pass is a free-choice mix of museums and city sights.

Buses and hikes are planned separately. Sky Hop Bus runs three routes: Asakusa and Tokyo Skytree, Tokyo Tower, Tsukiji and Ginza, and Shinjuku and Shibuya. The Keio Takaosan pass bundles the Mount Takao cable car and chairlift, a 50-minute train ride from Shinjuku, with a hot-spring towel voucher.
