Kagawa · Teshima
Admission to Teshima Art Museum, designed by architect Ryue Nishizawa. Wind and light enter through large openings in a column-free concrete shell, and water droplets rise from the floor and slowly change shape—the space itself is the artwork. If you are pairing it with Naoshima, fix your time on Teshima first and build the ferries around it.
Kagawa · Shodoshima
Set in an olive-and-citrus village on Shodoshima, this museum centers on Naoki Onogawa’s signature work, “Crane Tree”, and hangs large pieces rarely shown in ordinary exhibitions. Unlike busy Naoshima, the calm setting lets you spend real time with one artist, a strong reason to add Shodoshima to an art-island trip.

About 15 minutes on foot from Tonosho Port, this museum spreads its galleries through an old village of maze-like lanes. You seek out yokai-themed sculptural works along the alleys, so the visit doubles as a village walk, and its closeness to the ferry port makes it easy to fit into a short stay.

It removes the need to buy tickets each time on an art-island trip that shuttles between hubs such as Okayama and Takamatsu and the islands; check before booking whether the Naoshima and Teshima routes are covered.
Build the day around your Teshima Art Museum slot. As the signature museum, it may use date- and time-specific entry, so secure your time on Teshima first, then fit your departure port—Uno or Takamatsu—and the order of your Naoshima visit around it.
Each island feels different. Naoshima gathers museums, architecture and outdoor works and draws crowds, while the two Shodoshima museums—one devoted to a single painter's large works, the other to yokai pieces hidden in old lanes—are quieter visits. To avoid the busiest spots, consider giving Shodoshima its own day.
