From Tokugawa Ieyasu's mausoleum to a ninja theme park: 7 Nikko tickets

Nikko spreads UNESCO shrines and temples, a lake viewpoint, an Edo-period theme park and a miniature park in Kinugawa Onsen across the area, which is hard to fit into one day. Toshogu and Futarasan Shrine share the same World Heritage zone, Chuzenji and Akechidaira are on the lake side, and Edo Wonderland and Tobu World Square are near the hot-spring town. Group the 7 below by area to plan a day.

Our selection

How we chose

  • We chose across World Heritage visits (Toshogu, Futarasan, Chuzenji), a viewpoint (Akechidaira Ropeway) and hands-on parks (Edo Wonderland, Osaru Land, Tobu World Square) so the picks do not overlap.
  • Hours shorten with the season. Toshogu runs 09:00–17:00 from April to October and 09:00–16:00 from November to March, and Chuzenji closes at 15:30 from December to February, so winter days are short.
  • Ticket pickup differs. Toshogu and Tobu World Square exchange e-tickets at the Tobu-Nikko and Kinugawa-onsen station tourist information centres, and Tobu World Square does not accept screenshots or printouts.

Good to know before you book

Begin the World Heritage route at Toshogu, the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, known for its "three wise monkeys" and "sleeping cat" carvings. Then see Futarasan Shrine, said to be founded in 767, with its husband-and-wife cedars and the Nitara spring, all within one walkable area.

On the lake side, pair Chuzenji with the Akechidaira Ropeway. Chuzenji holds the Tachiki Kannon, said to be carved into a standing tree, and a dragon ceiling painting; the ropeway rises in minutes to a view of Lake Chuzenji, Mount Nantai and Kegon Falls, best in autumn colour or snow.

The Kinugawa Onsen side suits families. Edo Wonderland offers ninja and samurai shows and kimono or ninja costumes, Osaru Land has a monkey school and a zodiac show, and Tobu World Square recreates about 100 world landmarks at 1/25 scale.
