Where to stay in Kagoshima: 6 hotels in the city, at the Ibusuki sand baths and in Kirishima

Where you sleep in Kagoshima shapes the whole trip. City hotels put you close to the Tenmonkan entertainment district and the Sakurajima ferry, while the sand-bath onsen in Ibusuki and the resort inside Kirishima National Park are about 38 to 42 km from the city as the crow flies, so each is worth a night of its own. Below are three city hotels and three onsen stays in Ibusuki, Kirishima and Tarumizu.

How we chose

  • Compare city hotels by distance to Tenmonkan. Hotel Oriental Express KOJ Tenmonkan is about 500 m from the district with a tram stop about 120 m away. Shiroyama Hotel is about 900 m and Sheraton Kagoshima about 1.4 km.
  • Pick the kind of onsen you want. Ibusuki Hakusuikan, as its name says, has a sunamushi sand-steam onsen; LA VISTA Kirishima Hills has an open-air bath and a communal bath; Sheraton Kagoshima and Shiroyama Hotel have hot-spring communal baths.
  • Ibusuki and Kirishima are a long way from the city, so check shuttles. Hakusuikan and Shiroyama Hotel run a free local shuttle, while LA VISTA Kirishima Hills and Sheraton Kagoshima offer shuttle services.

Good to know before you book

Ferries to Sakurajima leave from the harbor in the city. Hotel Oriental Express KOJ Tenmonkan is about 1.6 km from the ferry terminal and Shiroyama Hotel about 2.1 km. If you plan a day trip to the island and dinner in Tenmonkan, the hotel closer to the district saves transfers.

Ibusuki Hakusuikan is a seven-story onsen resort with 196 rooms, a seasonal outdoor pool, a children's pool, a view pool, a Japanese garden, six restaurants and a full-service spa. Sunamushi means lying under hot natural sand to sweat, a bathing style unique to Ibusuki. Confirm age rules and how to book with the hotel.

LA VISTA Kirishima Hills opened in 2018 as a four-story, 105-room resort inside the national park. Besides open-air and communal baths it has a seasonal outdoor pool with a poolside bar and a karaoke room, and keeps children's cutlery and toothbrushes. It suits trips spent mostly at the resort.
