Train or bus? 3 Kyushu passes compared

Trains and highway buses both link Kyushu’s cities. If you will ride the Shinkansen and limited expresses, the JR Kyushu Rail Pass fits; if you are heading by bus to places far from stations, such as Kurokawa Onsen, SUNQ is the better tool. To mix the two by day, look at the All Kyushu Pass.

How we chose

  • The JR Kyushu Rail Pass comes in All, Northern and Southern areas, with 3-, 5- or 7-day options. Check which area your cities fall into.
  • Limited-express and Shinkansen reserved seats may need separate booking. Reserve popular sightseeing trains early.
  • SUNQ centers on highway and local buses. Some routes require advance reservations, so check the conditions for your route.

Good to know before you book

For a Shinkansen run from Fukuoka through Kumamoto to Kagoshima, or a limited-express loop from Hakata to Yufuin and Beppu, the JR Kyushu Rail Pass is the default. If you will only tour the north, compare the Northern Kyushu Rail Pass against the all-area version first.

SUNQ reaches highway and local buses across Kyushu, plus some ferries. This listing adds an unlimited Shimonoseki bus ticket, stretching the trip to the Kanmon Straits.

The All Kyushu Pass splits into three rail days and three bus days used on separate dates, so you can choose trains for city-to-city days and buses for trips into hot-spring towns.
