3 theme parks to add to a Noboribetsu hot-spring stay

Noboribetsu is famous for the hot springs of Hell Valley, but three very different theme parks around the onsen town let you add one to each day of an overnight stay. It is just over an hour from Sapporo by JR limited express and pairs well with Lake Toya.

How we chose

  • The Bear Park sits on a mountain reached by ropeway from the onsen town. Check ropeway hours and weather closures.
  • Ninja and oiran shows at Date Jidaimura run at set times. Plan your route around the day’s schedule after entry.
  • Marine Park Nixe is near Noboribetsu Station, while the Bear Park and Date Jidaimura are in and around the onsen town. Include bus or taxi time when deciding how many to visit.

Good to know before you book

Staying in the onsen town, visit the Bear Park around check-in and walk the Hell Valley trail in the evening. Next day, stop at Date Jidaimura or Marine Park Nixe before heading to Sapporo or New Chitose.

With children, centre the day on Nixe’s penguin parade and dolphin show and feeding time at the Bear Park; for adults, focus on the Date Jidaimura shows and Edo-era food.

In winter the mountaintop Bear Park is cold and snowy. Dress warmly, and on days when the ropeway is unreliable, prioritise the mostly indoor Marine Park Nixe.
