Beppu · Kannawa
Named after the old custom of steaming offerings for Kamado Hachimangu shrine in 90 °C spring vapour. Compact as it is, each pond differs in colour and form, with a free footbath, facial steam, drinkable spring water, and eggs and pudding cooked in the steam.
Beppu · Kannawa
One of the Beppu Hells, where spring water that emerges clear turns a pale bluish white as it collects in the pond. Laid out like a Japanese garden, it feels calmer than the other hells and links on foot with the rest of Kannawa.

Named because the round bubbles of grey mud boiling up in its ponds resemble monks’ shaved heads. A vent called the “demon’s snore” roars as steam bursts out, and after the walking trail you can rest in the on-site footbath.
Beppu · City centre
A 90 m tower built in 1957 as the centrepiece of a hot-spring tourism expo, with a deck overlooking steaming Beppu and Beppu Bay. It is walkable from Beppu Station, an easy evening stop after the Hells.
In Kannawa you can walk between Kamado Jigoku, Oniishi Bozu Jigoku and Shiraike Jigoku. Snack on onsen eggs or pudding and rest in a footbath for a half-day route.
Each hell looks different: a pale-blue pond, a pool of bubbling grey mud, a hell whose steam cooks food. Choosing just two or three still gives plenty of variety.
Staying in Yufuin or at a Beppu onsen hotel, do the Hells in the morning and finish with a bath or the Beppu Tower view in the afternoon for the shortest route.
