Oita Airport sits on the Kunisaki Peninsula, about an hour from Beppu by airport bus. Many travellers instead drive or take a highway bus from Fukuoka in a little over two hours as part of a wider Kyushu trip.
In Oita the hotel is part of the destination. Beppu Golf Club is an early layout from around 1930, while the Kuju highlands sit high enough that a round there feels quite different from one on the coast.
Beppu and Yufuin are busiest in autumn and winter, so it is safer to book the hotel first. The Kuju highlands are a good summer escape but run cold in winter, with foggy mornings.
