Khao San gets louder as the night goes on. Hotels facing the main strip put bars and street food at the door, but music can carry late. If sleep comes first, look at the inner lanes of Soi Rambuttri, Samsen Road or Phra Athit Road, which are noticeably calmer.
The area's weak spot is rail access. The nearest MRT stations, Sam Yot and Sanam Chai, are about 1.5km away, so taxis, Grab and the Chao Phraya river boats do most of the work. Phra Athit Pier is walkable from Khao San and connects along the river to the Grand Palace (Tha Chang), Wat Arun and ICONSIAM.
The Grand Palace and Wat Pho are hot at midday and crowded with tour groups in the afternoon. Staying in the Old Town lets you visit right after opening, retreat to the hotel pool through the heat, then head out again in the evening. The Grand Palace has a dress code, so pack long trousers or a skirt and something that covers your shoulders.
For flights, Don Mueang Airport is about 20km away, closer than Suvarnabhumi (about 28km). Arriving on a low-cost carrier into Don Mueang makes an Old Town base a little easier.
