Chiang Rai Day Trip from Chiang Mai: 6 Tours to the White Temple, Blue Temple and Golden Triangle

Chiang Rai sits roughly three hours north of Chiang Mai by road, and one long day is enough to see its three signature sights: the White Temple's mirrored white spires, the electric-blue interior of the Blue Temple, and the Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet across the Mekong. Four of these tours collect you from your Chiang Mai hotel; two start in Chiang Rai city for travellers who sleep there. Choose by stops, shared or private, and what the booking already covers.

How these Chiang Rai tours differ

  • We separate tours that reach the Golden Triangle from those that stop at the temples and Black House only.
  • We compare shared vans with private cars and say whether an English-speaking guide is included, optional or absent.
  • We note whether lunch and admission fees are covered, and which tours begin in Chiang Mai versus Chiang Rai city.

Planning a Chiang Rai day trip from Chiang Mai

Plan for a long day. Pickups run between about 7 and 9 am, the White Temple comes mid-morning, and returns to Chiang Mai fall between roughly 7 pm and 9 pm depending on whether the route adds the Golden Triangle. If three hours each way sounds heavy, sleep in Chiang Rai and book one of the two tours that start there; the White Temple becomes a relaxed first stop instead of the end of a long drive.

The stops each offer something different. The White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) is a modern artwork in white plaster and mirror glass; Black House (Baan Dam) is the dark, carved-wood counterpart by the artist Thawan Duchanee; the Blue Temple glows with deep blue and gold inside. Huay Pla Kang pairs a giant Goddess of Mercy statue with a hilltop pagoda, while the Golden Triangle viewpoint looks over the Mekong and Ruak rivers where three countries meet.

Dress for the White Temple. Several operators warn that sleeveless, crop and off-the-shoulder tops and short shorts or skirts may be refused at the gate, so cover shoulders and knees. Bring sunscreen and a hat, plus a light jacket if your route climbs to a mountain viewpoint.

Shared tours keep logistics simple, usually with a van, lunch and a guide on a fixed order of stops. Private cars let you linger or skip a stop, and some are priced per vehicle rather than per person. Several shared departures need two to four guests and can be cancelled the day before if the minimum is missed, so book early, and expect the schedule to shift on the day. Tours generally run in light rain.

Itineraries, stop order, admission fees and inclusions differ by operator and can change on the day. Check the product page for current inclusions, minimum guests, pickup areas and cancellation terms before you book.
