Basic Information

Meiji Jingu Gaien Ginkgo Avenue is one of Tokyo's most famous autumn photography spots, located in the Aoyama area. The approximately 300-meter-long avenue features 146 ginkgo trees arranged in four rows, creating an impressive symmetrical landscape. Each autumn, the trees turn brilliant yellow, transforming the street into a golden corridor that attracts photographers and visitors from across Japan.
The avenue was established in 1923 as part of the development of Meiji Jingu Gaien. Its distinctive landscape was carefully designed using perspective, with trees of different heights arranged to create a view toward the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery. The trees are regularly pruned into elegant conical shapes, making the avenue recognizable even outside the autumn season.
The most popular time to visit is from mid-November to early December, when the golden leaves cover the branches and gradually fall onto the sidewalks. During spring and summer, the trees form a refreshing green avenue, while winter reveals their neatly maintained silhouettes. The changing scenery makes the street a pleasant walking destination throughout the year.
Located near Aoyama's fashionable shopping streets and cafés, Ginkgo Avenue offers an opportunity to enjoy natural scenery in central Tokyo. Its perfectly aligned trees and picturesque atmosphere have made it a favorite location for travel photography and social media posts. Visitors can explore the surrounding Meiji Jingu Gaien area, known for its sports facilities and historic buildings, while enjoying one of Tokyo's most distinctive seasonal landscapes.

Monkey Tips

For the most beautiful golden photographs, plan your visit between late November and early December. On clear mornings, sunlight highlights the yellow leaves and creates a beautiful contrast with the blue sky. Weekday mornings are generally less crowded than weekends during peak autumn season.
The avenue was designed to create a symmetrical view toward the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery. Use the pedestrian paths to photograph the rows of trees and their perspective. The picture gallery is closed for renovation until May 31, 2027, and scaffolding may affect the background of photographs. Never enter the roadway just to take pictures.
If you want to photograph the trees after dark, check whether the seasonal illumination has been officially announced. Tokyo held an evening illumination from November 22 to 30 in 2025, but the 2026 schedule has not yet been officially confirmed. Do not assume that the lights operate every night during autumn.
