Basic Information

Goryokaku Tower is a famous observation tower located beside Goryokaku Park in Hakodate, Hokkaido. Standing 107 meters tall, the tower offers panoramic views of the historic Goryokaku Fortress, known for its distinctive five-pointed star shape. The current tower opened in 2006, replacing the original structure built in 1964, and has become one of Hakodate's most recognizable landmarks.
From the observation deck approximately 90 meters above ground, visitors can admire the entire star-shaped fortress, its surrounding moat, and the city of Hakodate. The scenery changes throughout the seasons, with pink cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, colorful foliage in autumn, and beautiful snow-covered landscapes in winter. On clear days, Mount Hakodate and the Tsugaru Strait are also visible.
The observation area features the Goryokaku Historic Corridor, where detailed models and exhibitions introduce the fortress's history and its role in the final years of the Edo period. Visitors can also see a bronze statue of Toshizo Hijikata, a famous Shinsengumi leader associated with the Battle of Hakodate. On the lower observation floor, a transparent glass section allows visitors to look directly down from a height of 86 meters.
Goryokaku gained renewed attention among anime fans as an important setting in Detective Conan: The Million-dollar Pentagram, released in 2024. Goryokaku Tower also participated in the movie's official Hakodate sightseeing campaign that year. Combining spectacular views, Japanese history, and a connection to popular anime culture, the tower offers a memorable experience for visitors to Hakodate.

Monkey Tips

For the best photographs of Goryokaku's star shape, head to the second observation deck, approximately 90 meters above ground. The fortress looks particularly beautiful during cherry blossom season in spring and when covered in snow during winter. If you are a Detective Conan fan, this is also a great place to appreciate the real-life landscape featured in the movie's Hakodate setting.
Don't miss the historical exhibits inside the observation deck. The Goryokaku Historic Corridor features detailed models and displays about the fortress, while the bronze statue of Toshizo Hijikata provides a connection to the history featured in the Conan movie. Before leaving, visit the first observation floor and try standing on the glass See-Through Floor, 86 meters above ground.
To save on admission, consider purchasing a discounted advance ticket at a convenience store such as 7-Eleven, Lawson, or FamilyMart. Adult tickets cost 1,080 yen instead of the regular 1,200 yen, and tickets can be used directly at the elevator entrance without exchange. Goryokaku Tower does not have a parking lot for private cars, so visitors driving to the site should use nearby paid parking facilities.
