Basic Information
Mameda-machi is a historic district located in Hita City, Oita Prefecture, often referred to as the "Little Kyoto of Kyushu." The area preserves traditional streets and merchant buildings dating back to the Edo period, when Hita prospered as an important commercial center under the direct administration of the Tokugawa shogunate. In 2004, Mameda-machi was designated an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
The streets are lined with traditional Japanese merchant houses, white-plastered warehouses, tiled roofs, and wooden lattice windows. The original street layout from the Edo period has been carefully preserved, allowing visitors to appreciate the atmosphere of an old Japanese merchant town. Historic buildings such as the Kusano family residence reflect the prosperity of Hita's trading families.
Today, the district features approximately 100 shops, including souvenir stores, traditional confectionery shops, cafés, and restaurants. Visitors can explore local specialty products, discover historic sake breweries, or visit museums introducing the culture and history of the town. Kimono rentals and rickshaw rides also offer different ways to experience the traditional streetscape.
Mameda-machi is especially beautiful during the Tenryo Hita Hina Matsuri, a spring festival featuring traditional Japanese dolls displayed in historic residences and local facilities. With its preserved architecture, historical atmosphere, and cultural experiences, the district offers visitors an opportunity to discover the heritage of Kyushu while enjoying a relaxing stroll through an old Japanese town.
