Basic Information
The Christmas Tree of Biei is one of Hokkaido's most recognizable winter photography spots, located in the peaceful countryside of Biei Town. A single spruce tree stands alone on a gently rolling agricultural hill, creating a simple yet striking landscape. Its naturally conical shape resembles a Christmas tree, which is how this famous landmark received its name.
During winter, the surrounding farmland becomes covered in snow, leaving the dark green tree standing against a wide white landscape. On clear days, the blue sky and sunlight create beautiful contrasts, while the tree's long shadow adds another distinctive element to photographs. Its solitary appearance has made it a popular destination for travelers and photographers visiting Biei.
Although the snow-covered scenery is especially famous, the Christmas Tree can be admired throughout the year. In warmer seasons, the surrounding fields change color as crops grow and the agricultural landscape develops. These seasonal changes create different backgrounds for the same tree, reflecting the natural beauty of Biei's rolling hills.
The tree stands on privately owned farmland and is viewed from the designated roadside area. Visitors are not permitted to enter the fields, even when they are covered in snow. There are no shops or dedicated parking facilities at the site, allowing the countryside scenery itself to remain the main attraction.

Monkey Tips
For beautiful winter photographs, visit on a clear day when the contrast between the white snow, blue sky, and green tree is especially striking. Depending on the position of the sun, the tree may cast a long shadow across the snow. Remember to take all photographs from the permitted viewing area and never step onto the surrounding farmland.
If you plan to visit during winter, consider using the Christmas Tree Liner shuttle from Shiki-no-Johokan near JR Biei Station. There is no parking lot at the site, and stopping vehicles on the nearby residential road is restricted. Check the official shuttle schedule and availability before traveling.
Prepare for cold weather and limited facilities. There are no public toilets available during winter around JR Bibaushi Station or Shin-ei Hill Observation Park, so use facilities near JR Biei Station before departure. You can also check the latest crowd conditions on the official Biei congestion information website.
