Basic Information

Kanda Myojin Shrine is a historic Shinto shrine located in Chiyoda City, Tokyo, near the popular Akihabara district. Founded in 730, the shrine has a history of nearly 1,300 years and has long been regarded as an important guardian shrine of Edo, the former name of Tokyo. Today, it remains a significant place of worship for people praying for good fortune, business prosperity, and successful relationships.
The shrine is dedicated to three principal deities associated with matchmaking, business prosperity, and protection from misfortune. One of its most recognizable features is the impressive vermilion Zuishinmon Gate, decorated with colorful carvings. Beyond the gate stands the main shrine building, featuring traditional Japanese architectural details and a striking red exterior.
Kanda Myojin is also famous for the Kanda Matsuri, one of Japan's most celebrated traditional festivals. Held on a major scale in May of odd-numbered years, the festival features impressive processions, portable shrines, and traditional celebrations that bring together local communities throughout central Tokyo.
Another distinctive aspect of Kanda Myojin is its connection to modern Japanese culture. Located close to Akihabara, the shrine offers unusual charms for protecting electronic devices and has collaborated with popular anime franchises. Visitors can also explore the EDOCCO Cultural Exchange Center, where Japanese culture, souvenirs, and special exhibitions are introduced.

Monkey Tips

For a memorable photo, visit the impressive Zuishinmon Gate at the shrine entrance. Its vivid red color and intricate decorations make it one of Kanda Myojin's most recognizable landmarks. Continue through the gate to see the main shrine building and explore the peaceful grounds.
If you are interested in Japanese pop culture, look for the shrine's unusual IT protection charms. Kanda Myojin is located near Akihabara and is known for offering charms associated with the safety of computers and electronic devices. This unique connection between traditional beliefs and modern technology makes an interesting souvenir.
If you visit Tokyo in May of an odd-numbered year, check the schedule of the Kanda Matsuri festival.
