Basic Information

The Ghibli Museum, Mitaka is one of Tokyo's most beloved animation museums, located near Inokashira Park in Mitaka City. Opened in 2001, the museum was designed under the direction of renowned filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki and offers visitors an opportunity to discover the imaginative world of Studio Ghibli.
Unlike a traditional museum, the building itself feels like a magical storybook. Colorful walls, winding staircases, stained-glass windows, and unexpected architectural details create the feeling of stepping inside an animated film. There is no fixed route through the museum, allowing visitors to explore the exhibits at their own pace.
One of the highlights is the permanent exhibition "Where a Film is Born", which introduces the creative process behind animation through sketches, models, artwork, and recreated artists' workspaces. The Saturn Theater also screens original Studio Ghibli short films that can only be experienced at the museum.
On the rooftop garden, visitors can find a five-meter-tall Robot Soldier inspired by the animated film "Castle in the Sky". Younger visitors can enjoy the Cat Bus play area, designed for children of elementary school age and below.
The museum also features the Straw Hat Café, the MAMMA AIUTO! souvenir shop, and a reading room filled with carefully selected books. Combining animation, art, architecture, and interactive experiences, the Ghibli Museum is a memorable destination for visitors who love Japanese animation and creative storytelling.

Monkey Tips

Tickets are only available through advance reservations. They go on sale at 10:00 a.m. Japan time on the 10th of each month for visits during the following month. As tickets are limited, booking as soon as sales open is recommended.
Don't miss the original short film at the Saturn Theater and the five-meter-tall Robot Soldier in the rooftop garden. The theater allows one screening per visitor, and the rooftop may close during bad weather.
Photography and video recording are not permitted inside the museum. Visitors can enjoy the imaginative exhibits without using their cameras, then explore the gift shop for unique Ghibli souvenirs.
