Basic Information
Nezu Shrine is one of Tokyo's most beautiful historic Shinto shrines, located in the quiet Nezu neighborhood of Bunkyo City. Surrounded by lush greenery, traditional architecture, and peaceful garden scenery, the shrine offers visitors a glimpse into the atmosphere of old Tokyo.
According to tradition, the shrine was founded nearly 1,900 years ago. The present shrine complex was established in 1706 under the patronage of Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, the fifth shogun of the Edo period. Several original structures, including the main sanctuary, worship hall, Karamon Gate, and Romon Gate, have survived and are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
One of the shrine's most famous attractions is the pathway lined with numerous bright red torii gates leading to Otome Inari Shrine. The beautiful tunnel of gates, surrounded by trees and traditional shrine buildings, has become one of Tokyo's most photogenic spots.
Nezu Shrine is also famous for its spring azalea garden, where approximately 3,000 azalea bushes representing around 100 varieties bloom in shades of pink, red, purple, and white. During the annual Bunkyo Azalea Festival in April, visitors can enjoy the colorful flowers against the backdrop of the shrine's historic architecture.
With its remarkable Edo-period buildings, picturesque torii pathway, and seasonal flowers, Nezu Shrine is an ideal destination for travelers interested in Japanese traditions, architecture, and beautiful scenery.

Monkey Tips
For beautiful photographs, visit the red torii gate pathway leading to Otome Inari Shrine in the morning, when the atmosphere is generally quieter. Please avoid photographing the stone approach directly in front of the main worship hall, where photography is prohibited.
The best time to enjoy the azalea garden is usually in April, particularly around the early to middle part of the month when many varieties are in bloom. The garden opens only during the seasonal festival, with a separate admission donation.
Nezu Shrine is only about five minutes on foot from Nezu Station. Allow approximately 30–60 minutes to explore the shrine grounds, and more time during the azalea festival.
