Basic Information

Tokyo National Museum, located in Ueno Park, is Japan's oldest national museum, with a history dating back to 1872. It is one of the country's most important cultural institutions, preserving and exhibiting valuable artworks, archaeological artifacts, and historical treasures from Japan and other parts of Asia.
The museum houses an extensive collection of more than 120,000 objects, including National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. Visitors can explore a wide variety of exhibits, such as traditional Japanese paintings, samurai armor, Buddhist sculptures, ceramics, kimono, and ukiyo-e prints.
The museum consists of several exhibition buildings. Highlights include the Honkan (Japanese Gallery), which traces the history of Japanese art; the Toyokan (Asian Gallery), featuring artworks from across Asia; and the Heiseikan, which displays Japanese archaeological discoveries and hosts special exhibitions.
With its impressive collections, historic architecture, and peaceful surroundings in Ueno Park, Tokyo National Museum offers visitors an excellent opportunity to discover Japan's rich artistic and cultural heritage.

Monkey Tips

Allow at least 1–2 hours to explore the museum, or more time if you plan to visit several exhibition buildings. First-time visitors with limited time can start at the Honkan (Japanese Gallery), which presents the highlights of Japanese art history.
The museum is generally closed on Mondays, except for certain public holidays. Opening hours are extended until 20:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Checking the official website before visiting is recommended.
Purchasing tickets online in advance can help avoid long queues, especially during popular exhibitions. Special exhibitions may require separate tickets.
Visitors can download the free TNM Art Guide app, which offers audio and text explanations in Korean, English, Japanese, and Chinese.
Photography is permitted for personal use in many permanent exhibition galleries, except where prohibited. Flash photography, tripods, and selfie sticks are not allowed. Photography is prohibited in special exhibition galleries.
Suitcases are not permitted inside the museum, so visitors should store large luggage elsewhere before arrival.
