Basic Information

Meiji Jingu Shrine, located near Harajuku in central Tokyo, is one of Japan's most important Shinto shrines. Established in 1920, it is dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken, who played significant roles in Japan's modernization.
The shrine is surrounded by a vast forest covering approximately 70 hectares, creating a peaceful atmosphere away from the busy streets of Tokyo. Visitors can walk along tree-lined pathways, pass through impressive wooden torii gates, and admire traditional Japanese shrine architecture.
Popular highlights include the Main Shrine, displays of traditional sake barrels, and the Meiji Jingu Inner Garden, known for its seasonal flowers and Kiyomasa's Well. The shrine offers visitors an opportunity to discover Japanese Shinto traditions while enjoying a quiet retreat in the heart of the city.

Monkey Tips

Visiting in the early morning is recommended for a quieter atmosphere and a relaxing walk through the forest.
Opening and closing hours change every month according to sunrise and sunset, so visitors should check the official schedule before planning their visit. Allow approximately 1 hour to explore the main shrine, or around 2 hours if visiting the Inner Garden and Meiji Jingu Museum.
Admission to the main shrine is free, but the Inner Garden and Museum require separate fees. Bringing some Japanese yen in cash is recommended for offerings, amulets, and goshuin stamps.
Visitors should respect shrine etiquette, including bowing at torii gates and following the traditional prayer customs. Photography is not permitted in front of the main sanctuary where worshippers pray.
Large suitcases cannot be stored inside the shrine grounds, so it is recommended to leave luggage at a station locker or hotel before visiting.
