It is a bay covering an area of 1,553 km² near the border with China.
As Vietnam's premier scenic spot, the central area of Ha Long Bay (434 km²) was registered as a natural park on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994 for its beautiful landscape.
Ha means 'descending' and Long means 'dragon', so Ha Long means a dragon descending from the sky.
The name Ha Long originates from a legend that when a dragon came down from the sky to stop invaders crossing the sea, it spat out jewels and beads from its mouth. Those jewels fell into the sea and became various shaped rocks, defeating the invaders.
While that is the legend, geologists say it is an island formed by limestone hills being eroded by seawater, rain, and wind over a long period of time. ^^;
