Begun in 1804 and completed in approximately three years, the Mausoleum of Emperor Minh Mang is one of the structures in Vietnam influenced by Chinese architectural styles. Emperor Minh Mang was a figure who devoted great effort to national organization, and the period during which he ruled marks the golden age of the Nguyen Dynasty. Among the most impressive features of the mausoleum are the civil and military officials, stone horse and elephant statues, and the ornate decoration of the Thien An Palace, all arranged on either side of the main gate, the Dai Hong Mon.
