- If you’d like to add a cart or have a specialist Guide for Hue Imperial City, please select the relevant option when booking.
Hue Imperial City is one of the city’s top attractions and most impressive sights. It includes palaces and tombs associated with the emperors.
Emperors of the Nguyen dynasty lived within this vast, walled complex. The inner area was once the Forbidden City, accessible only to the emperor, his concubines, and his closest attendants. Unauthorized entry could be punishable by death.
Restoration work is ongoing to preserve the site as a historic attraction, but little of the Forbidden City remains today, and much of it has been destroyed.
The South Gate, where visitors enter, is said to have been modeled after the Gate of the Forbidden City in Beijing. Inside the palace grounds, you’ll also find royal residences, temples, and the emperor’s own Forbidden Purple City, whose name was also inspired by Beijing’s Forbidden City.
Vietnamese Home-Style Meal at Chạn Restaurant A Vietnamese home-style set meal is included for lunch. Though less well-known than pho and banh mi, it features dishes Vietnamese people enjoy every day and is prepared with care.
One set is provided for every 2 people:
- Rice, morning glory, braised pork, grilled meat, and garlic shrimp
Drinks are not included. You can order them when you arrive at the restaurant and pay separately.
- Khai Dinh Tomb
Emperor Khai Dinh ruled from 1916 to 1925 during the later years of the Nguyen Dynasty. Construction of his tomb began in 1920 and was completed in 1931. Unlike other imperial tombs modeled on Chinese architecture, it features a distinctive European style, reflecting the influence of French colonial rule.
- Minh Mang Tomb
Construction of the Tomb of Emperor Minh Mang began in 1804 and was completed in around three years. It is one of the architectural sites built under Chinese influence.
Emperor Minh Mang devoted considerable effort to governing the country, and his reign marked the peak of the Nguyen dynasty.
The tomb is especially striking for the civil and military mandarins, horses, and elephants carved in stone and arranged on either side of Dai Hong Mon, its main gate, as well as the ornate Sung An Temple.
- Thien Mu Pagoda
Located on a hill overlooking the Perfume River, the site was established in 1601 and is famous for its seven-story pagoda.
At the entrance stands an octagonal, seven-story tower built in the 19th century. Rising more than 21 meters, it is regarded as one of Vietnam’s iconic structures, not just Hue’s. A Buddha statue is enshrined on each level. Two pavilions stand beside the tower: one houses a stele mounted on the back of a large tortoise, while the other contains a massive bell weighing over 2 tons.
