Hue Royal Palace (Kinh thành Huế)

Hue Imperial City is one of the city’s most remarkable attractions, featuring palaces and tombs associated with the emperors.
The emperors of the Nguyen dynasty lived within this vast walled complex. Its inner area was the Forbidden City, accessible only to the emperor, his concubines, and close attendants. Unauthorized entry could be punishable by death.
Restoration work is underway to preserve the site as a historical attraction, but little of the Forbidden City remains today, and much of it has been destroyed.
The South Gate, where visitors enter, is said to have been modeled on the Forbidden City in China. Beyond the South Gate, the complex also contains royal residences, temples, and the emperor’s own Forbidden City, whose name was also inspired by its Chinese counterpart.

Thien Mu Pagoda

Located on a hill overlooking the Perfume River, this site was built in 1601 and is famous for its seven-story pagoda.
At the entrance stands an octagonal, seven-story tower built in the 19th century. More than 21 meters tall, it is considered one of Vietnam’s most iconic architectural landmarks, not just in Hue. A Buddha statue is enshrined on each level. Two pavilions stand beside the tower: one houses a stele mounted on the back of a large turtle, while the other contains a massive bell weighing over 2 tons.

Khai Dinh Tomb

Emperor Khai Dinh ruled from 1916 to 1925, during the later years of the Nguyen dynasty. Construction of his tomb began in 1920 and was completed in 1931. Unlike other imperial tombs modeled on Chinese styles, it is a concrete structure with a distinctly Western design, featuring many European architectural elements influenced by French colonial rule.

Minh Mang Tomb

Construction of Minh Mang Tomb began in 1804 and was completed in just over three years. It is one of the architectural sites built under Chinese influence.
Emperor Minh Mang played a major role in reorganizing the country, and his reign marked the golden age of the Nguyen dynasty.
The tomb is especially memorable for the stone statues of civil and military officials, horses, and elephants lining both sides of its main gate, Dai Hong Mon, as well as the ornate Sung An Temple.
