Ha Long Bay is a bay covering an area of 1,553 km² near the border with China. As Vietnam's number one scenic spot, the central area of Ha Long Bay (434 km²) was registered as a natural park on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994 for its beautiful landscape. Ha means 'descending' and Long means 'dragon,' so Ha Long means a dragon descending from the sky. The name Ha Long originates from a legend that a dragon descended from the sky to stop invaders coming across the sea and spat out jewels and pearls from its mouth, which fell into the sea and became various shapes of strangely formed rocks to defeat the invaders. While that is the legend, geologists say it is an island formed by limestone hills eroded by seawater, wind, and rain over a long period. The islands with sharp, craggy rocks, cliffs, and amazing caves are worthy of being called Vietnam's best view, as their colors change slightly with the weather and sunlight.; 1.
