Hue Imperial City is one of the region’s top attractions, with palaces where emperors lived and their tombs.
Emperors of the Nguyen Dynasty lived within this vast walled complex. The inner area was once the Forbidden City, accessible only to the emperor, his concubines, and his close attendants. Anyone who entered without permission could be sentenced to death.
The site is being restored and preserved as a historic attraction, but little of the forbidden area remains today, and much of it has been destroyed.
The South Gate, where visitors enter, is said to have been modeled after China’s Forbidden City. Inside the palace grounds are royal residences, temples, and the emperor’s own Forbidden City, whose name was also inspired by its counterpart in China.
Vietnamese home-style meal at CHẠN Restaurant A Vietnamese home-style set meal is included for lunch. While not as well-known as pho or banh mi, this traditional meal is a local favorite and is prepared with care.
One set is served for every 2 guests and includes:
- Rice
- Stir-fried morning glory
- Braised pork
- Grilled meat
- Garlic shrimp
Drinks are not included. Please order them at the restaurant and pay separately.
- Khai Dinh Imperial Tomb
Emperor Khai Dinh ruled from 1916 to 1925, during the later years of the Nguyen Dynasty. Construction of his tomb began in 1920 and was completed in 1931. This Western-style concrete structure stands in clear contrast to other imperial tombs modeled on Chinese architecture, with its many European design elements reflecting the influence of French colonial rule.
- Minh Mang Tomb
Built over approximately three years, beginning in 1804, Minh Mang Tomb is an example of architecture influenced by Chinese design. Minh Mang worked hard to strengthen and organize the country, and his reign marked the peak of the Nguyen Dynasty. Highlights include the statues of civil and military mandarins, horses and elephants lining either side of Dai Hong Mon, the tomb’s main gate, and the ornate Sung An Temple.
- Thien Mu Pagoda
Located on a hill overlooking the Perfume River, this site was built in 1601 and is famous for its seven-story stone pagoda.
At the entrance stands an octagonal, seven-story tower built in the 19th century. More than 21 meters tall, it is considered one of Vietnam’s iconic architectural landmarks. A Buddha statue is enshrined on each level, and two pavilions stand on either side of the tower. One houses a stele mounted on the back of a large turtle, while the other contains a giant bell weighing more than 2 tons.
